ACTIVITY N° 26: RENEWABLE AND NONRENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES -ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Good afternoon, everyone!
How are you? Hope you are doing great!

Let’s write down the date:
Today is Tuesday, May 26th
Today is cloudy.
We are in autumn.

SCIENCE

Today we are going to revise the topic: NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES

BEFORE READING
REFLECT:
1-      DO RENEWABLE RESOURCES AFFECT THE ENVIRONMENT?

Read pages 48 and 49 to find out the answer to the abovementioned question.

ACTIVITY 1:
Decide whether the following sentences are ADVANTAGES or DISADVANTAGES.
[Señalar si las siguientes oraciones hacen referencia a una ventaja o una desventaja]
A) Coal mining damages the land and pollutes water in the ground. _____________
B) Burning this produces air pollution. Spills harm ecosystems. __DISADVANTAGE__
C) This uses moving water. It is renewable and does not cause pollution._____________
D) This is renewable and does not cause pollution. _____________
E) Solar fields require large amounts of land and sunlight. _____________
F) This generates electricity from nuclear reactions without polluting the air. _____________
G) Drilling for natural gas can pollute air and water ____________

ACTIVITY 2:

Now, take a look at the chart and complete it using the information on activity 1.

RESOURCE:

ADVANTAGES      (+)
DISADVANTAGES   ( -)
OIL
-Relatively inexpensive
(we have the machines to obtain and use it)
- EXAMPLE: B) Burning this produces air pollution. Spills harm ecosystems.
COAL
-Relatively inexpensive
(we have the machines to obtain and use it)
-
NATURAL GAS
-It burns more cleanly than the other fossil fuels.

-
NUCLEAR ENERGY
-

Wastes from nuclear energy plants cause harm to living things.
SOLAR ENERGY
-It is renewable and does not cause pollution

-
WIND ENERGY
-

Wind does not blow steadily in most places
HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY
-

Dams destroy river habitats and disrupt fish populations.

AFTER READING

Answer: Which resource do you think has the greatest (=biggest) disadvantage?

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: Draw the resource you think has the greatest (=biggest) disadvantage. Explain why you chose it in brief.

That’s all for now!

See you in some minutes :)
